My AskGaryVee Question

March 21, 2016 by Ngome

On Friday, March 11, 2016, I drove to Austin to meet Gary Vaynerchuk aka Gary Vee. If you are a late bloomer his new book #AskGaryVee: One Entrepreneur’s Take On Leadership, Social Media, and Self-Awareness is derived from his self-titled YouTube show. I had one burning question regarding the direction of my business and social media. Last minute I decided to record it on my phone so I can turn it into a podcast episode.

In this episode you will learn:

  • The difference between corporation and SBO when it comes to social media.
  • Why are SBO shifting when it comes to  marketing?
  • Are marketing agencies good at content marketing?
  • The advice Gary Vee provided.

Question: Recently I’ve changed my marketing company from focusing on account management to training and development because I’m realizing small business owners they don’t want to focus on content marketing and with social media the focus on live video, video, and images. I feel that the small business owner has to do that (content) themselves versus outsourcing it. With that in mind, do you feel that business owners are going to continue to outsource social media management or will they create it in-house?

Gary Vee’s Answer:

It really comes down to the business, right. Corporate America, the world David & I come from, they’re going to outsource it forever because they can.

Small businesses they are taking stuff in-house because most agencies are not good at selling shit. When I look at the landscape of social media agencies at the micro level, small shops they stink. They read headlines, they’re not good at content. They don’t know how to drive. When he (reference to business owner in the crowd) hires them for $1,000 a month, when nobody shows up to the hair salon, that agency is just putting out organic stuff and doesn’t get paid well. They’re going to loose.

Here’s what I think, they both will stay. Both are options. Both will happen, but it comes down to chops. I think what’s great about hearing what you’re doing it’s no different than Meerkat. You need to decide for yourself what you’re best at. Are you best at giving advice to freeing people up? Best at motivating? Best at teaching? Current events? Maybe create a newsletter at $25 a month that just tells people what’s going on , that’s scalable to a bigger business.

Too many people are following everyone else’s blueprint. You need to follow what you’re best at and that’s what you have to develop. What people don’t understand about me, I’m a very big time business man. It’s time for everyone to start recognizing I built a $60 million business before I came out and started being a pundit. When I started my agency, I built an agency that I’ve been running for four years from $3 to $100 million in revenue on Madison Ave. That’s real!

David: That’s you and your brother hustling in our conference room for a long time.

Gary Vee: I already had money when I started VaynerMedia because I was running a business I treated it like a business. We started out of the conference room so I didn’t have to pay rent. Entrepreneurs these days are raising money, getting all fancy, and they’re just trying to raise money for the next round of a business.

So I like the way you reacted to the newsletter. Don’t worry about how I’m doing it or anybody else. Everything works by the way. Not everything works for you. Got it!
